(Today’s cliffhanger is brought to you by Star Pirates.)
How can this beeeeeeeeee???
Certainly did, Kris, nice one!
When and which uinverse did he come from? You're hurting my brain.
Vanderbeam in Katarakis's time suit? But…he never got the time suit in this universe…did he?…and the superlinear drive means he never leaves the universe where Deep Time got Katarakis and the suit disappeared! Besides, I don't think the time suit lets you actually travel to alternate universes, does it?
The suit doesn't let you travel between universes, no. So we have to assume that at some point, our Vanderbeam does get a hold of a timesuit.
But remember, THIS universe's Katarakis and a charged timesuit came along for the ride, and he escaped with it (in http://starslip.com/2009/02/05/starslip-number-97… So there is one at large.
Your link is broken, for some reason it leads to this comic http://starslip.com/2005/11/16/starslip-number-12… instead of this one http://starslip.com/2009/02/05/starslip-number-97… for some reason. Awesome reveal though, I can't wait to find out how this all happened.
One thing I'm wondering about, is this the current Starslip universe? Or the Starslip Crisis universe? Cause, according to the comic you just linked, Deep Time came and left before planting a bomb in the Starslip universe.
Also, were there two Katarakises at any point, the one trying to take over the Starslip universe, who got sent away with Deep Time, and the one that was aboard the Fuseli that came threw with Vanderbeam and Co. then latter stole Vanderbeam's time suit to escape the Fuseli. Or was there just one Katarakis, who escaped Deep Time to steal Vanderbeam's suit.
Basically, I guess I'm asking if this story is taking place in the 'Starslip Crisis universe', just before Jupiter blew up and sent the Fuseli into the 'Starslip universe'?
Today's strip must take place in the Starslip Crisis universe, where there was the war with Deep Time and a bomb in Jupiter, based on what Xxxyyy said in Wednesday's strip.
That universe had a Vanderbeam (and a time suit and a Katarakis) that starslipped into the universe where they use the superlinear drive, and arrived two years earlier. That put two Katarakises and two time suits in the superlinear universe. Deep Time took the one local to that universe.
The Vanderbeam in today's strip must have found a starslip drive and come in from the superlinear universe after acquiring one of the time suits — or else this Vanderbeam is from another universe entirely that we haven't seen yet.
I don't know how the Vanderbeam we see today could be from the future of this universe, since he starslipped out into the superlinear universe. Come to think of it, what happens to the you in the universe you leave behind when you starslip to an alternate universe?
Time travel gives me a headache. And universe-hopping makes it squared.
Awesome ideal for todays stirp. I really didn't see it coming but it also makes sense. I like the art in panel four.
I do love plot twists, Kris!
Not gonna lie, I have been thoroughly lost and confused as to who's who and what's going on ever since the strip turned into a children's coloring book and then suddenly started featuring characters I'm unfamiliar with….
So maybe they never made it out of pre-crisis universe? Maybe they didn't slip in time. In the last panel of Jan 08's strip, the bomb is exploding and Memnon is still on 1 of the countdown. Then the awesome comic with everything broken… that isn't what normally happens in starslip. Maybe the bomb, modified by Xxxyyy, triggered early through the machinations of Katarakis, went off and modified the universe to one without starslip.
is there a homage to gordon freeman there?
My mind was blown, absolutely. Who knew that Memnon would go bald?? I get the sense this would probably be a little less fun of a world to time travel in, since the universe pretty much comes to a dead stop, Xxxyyy or no Xxxyyy, pretty shortly.
I'm more blown away by the fact that he called Jinx his friend. This MUST be a parallel dimension!
I think that's a cane, not a crowbar — the shape's all wrong.
But yeah, I'm having one of those head-tilt "Ah-WUH?" moments. 'Scuse me while I wipe up the drool …
wow. when you promise a mindblower, you certainly deliver. can't wait till Monday, although I know that won't begin to answer my questions. damn you Kris!!
Starslip works by switching universes but you have to swap with a version of yourself that's in the other universe so when they starslipped into the new story's universe they must have doomed another fuesli. The alternate is they starslipped, it didn't destroy the universe and thus the vanderbeam who got slipped into the exploding universe grew old and got hold of a timesuit.
Either that or he somehow gets an old starslip drive in the new universe and then travels back and uses a timesuit to get to this point in time.
Oh, cool. That explains stuff pretty well.
I like it and I didn't expect it. Mission accomplished.
Man I'm so excited for Monday!
This has to be the new universe doesn't it. Kris mentioned that "this universe's" Chronomatic chose a different look for his time suit. So this is the new universe. My only question is since there was never a war with the future why was the bomb placed there at all.
This is the old universe. There's no Jupiter bomb in the new universe!! That's a hell of a plot point to drop on everyone.
This is the crisis universe. If it helps, imagine everyone drawn with round heads and no necks.
That actually helps a lot >.>
Two mind-shattering fourth panels in a row. I'm impressed, Kris.
