Starslip was nominated for a 2012 Ignatz Award in the category of Outstanding Online Comic!

The Ignatz Awards, named for the character in the classic comic strip Krazy Kat by George Herriman, is a festival prize that recognizes outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The ballot is created by a panel of five cartoonists and is voted on by the attendees of the SPX festival. This year’s jurors are Edie Fake, Minty Lewis, Dylan Meconis, Lark Pien and Julia Wertz.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to the jury!

Starslip on GoComics.com

So a while back I met up John Glynn, a hotshot muckity-muck at Universal Press Syndicate. I sez to him I sez, “Hey Johnny, how do I get Starslip in your newspaper funny pages? It’s got comedy, pathos, romance — it’s got it all!” John takes his cigar out of his mouth and says, “Listen, kiddo. I like your mustard. But I got somethin’ better for ya than the papes.”

Better than the papers? Was this guy for real?! I craned my neck closer, despite my trying not to look too interested.

“It’s GoComics.com. You’d be right up there with the likes of Calvin and Hobbes, Foxtrot, Pearls Before Swine, and Luann.”

I was rapidly losing the upper hand in this negotiation, as the names of these great comics had already made me wet my pants. I think John pretended not to notice. My voice cracked as I half-shouted “Ha! Sounds too good to be true. What’s the catch?”

“No catch, kid. Howzabout your Starslip runs five days a week at GoComics.com starting July 9?” I tried to act nonchalant but suddenly realized I was wearing mismatched shoes. “Sounds like a sweetheart deal for you, maybe,” I said coolly, “but what’s in it for me?” I glanced down again. Getting dressed in the dark, I had also accidentally put on one of my wife’s blouses.

“A whole new audience who’s never heard of it before. They’ll probably love it. With Starslip finished, maybe this’ll give it a chance to reach new people. Give it new life.”

“Interesting,” I intoned, but the extreme nervous shaking of my limbs gave me away. “Maybe I’ll have to give this GoComics thing a try.” Except instead of the words “a try,” I accidentally burped. I shot him a look, hoping he’d think it was intentional.

“You seem to have a lot of health problems that I’m worried about,” said Johnny.

“I certainly do,” I said, clapping him on the back. “I certainly do.”

Starslip at San Diego Comic Con

Deep Time has already started to fade from existence! It’s the only reason they didn’t stop us from finding the Higgs boson this time.

I’ll be at San Diego Comic Con 2012 at booth 1237, next to Scott Kurtz and Penny Arcade:

I will have Starslip Volumes 1 through 4 with me, as well as something to commemorate the ending of Starslip before Volume 5 arrives:

Yes! At SDCC you’ll be able to get The Starslip Companion, a new 64-page commentary book to supplement the seven-year arc of Starslip. It features character breakdowns, trivia, my design philosophies and inspirations, and the origins and endings of the strip.

I will also have the 4″ fully-embroidered Fuseli service patch — the patch that the crew members wear on their uniform shoulders. It features the United Star Configuration motto “Honor, Service, Third Thing” as well as the year of commission for the Fuseli (formerly the Crimson Fall). I’m very happy with how these came out!

I’ll also be taking single-character original art commissions throughout the show. Watch me draw or come back for it later in the con!

See you next week in San Diego!

Live Video Q&A Stream Tonight at 7PM PST

Hello all! I’ll be talking with you about Starslip tonight, June 18, at 7:00 PM Pacific for a little post-strip fan discussion. You’ll find me at my Ustream zone. You can ask questions either in the Ustream chatroom or on Twitter by using hashtag #starslip.

I’ll record it so if you can’t make it, you can still watch it later. I’ll talk about what’s next, like the fifth and final book, the printed Starslip Companion, and maybe we’ll go trawling the old Starslip directories together, where I found this:

See you tonight!
